Over at the Official Google Blog, they have announced the new browser, they call “Google Chrome”. Google announced by commissioning illustrator Scott McCloud to draw an online comic book.
Why release a web browser in today’s market? They say

Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web….Because we [at Google] spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there

Google is planning on formally launching the project on Sept. 3, 2008, but the Chrome website isn’t visible to the public yet. Google is only releasing a version for Windows, with Mac and Linux versions coming soon, once Chrome is “faster and more robust.”
